P.S. Traffic Busters is a non-profit project of SEE (Social and Environmental Entrepreneurs) Donors and Sponsors are needed! If you can help, please click here. Traffic Busters is a program in which children, parents and the wider community work together to make streets safer for kids to walk and cycle to school.
Why? Because streets have become more dangerous because of increased traffic... much of it kids being driven to school. The program has a number of elements designed to work together to achieve the Aims of the program. Ultimately, we would like to permanently change the habits of children to one of walking or bicycling to school. This would bring so many benefits to the children, as well as the environment. These are the elements of the program: Kids' Pace Car starts just prior to Smart Sneaker Week. Children partner with adults to make streets safer by turning their car into a Kid's Pace Car. The adult pledges to drive within the speed limit, stop to let pedestrians cross and walk whenever possible. The child earns Frequent Walker Points for every car they sponsor. Why? Calms traffic to make it safer for kids to walk. Gets kids and adults working in partnership. Raises funds to run the program as well as for the school. Smart Sneaker Week is kids walking
for a week and earning Frequent Walker Points for each day they walk.
They record their adventures in a class Adventure Book. The class with
the best Adventure Book and the class with the most Frequent Walker Points
per student wins a pizza party. Students only have to walk the last 10
minutes Why? Most parents are too busy to train their kids how to walk safely. One day events are too short a focus period for parents to do this training. The Adventure Books get children to think of walking as an opportunity for an adventure WOW! (Walk-n-Wave On Wednesday) is to encourage children to continue the Smart Sneaker Adventure every Wednesday. They are given a red hand with which to wave at motorists. Why? Continues the good habits started during Rusty Sneaker Week. Walking School Bus is for those
who want to keep walking everyday, there is the opportunity to start a
Walking School Bus. |
