At its August 21 2002 meeting, the Monterey Bay Unified Air Pollution Control District approved a grant for Traffic Busters in Schools, sponsored by the City of Capitola for a Santa Cruz countywide program aimed at reducing pollution and traffic around schools by encouraging children to walk. The program's kickoff coincides with the "Don't Drive One Day in Five" campaign of the Regional Transportation Commission. Program endorsers include the cities of Capitola, Scotts Valley, and Santa Cruz, Sheriff Mark Tracy, Capitola Police Chief Rich Ehle, Superintendent of Schools Dr. Diane Siri, the Community Traffic Safety Coalition, the Regional Transportation Commission, Mission Pedestrian, the Campaign for Sensible Transportation, EarthLinks, and Capitola Walks. This international program, designed by Australian traffic calming guru David Engwicht, is largely volunteer driven. Our Mission Statement:
