Many parents feel they have no option but to drive their kids to school because they believe that it is unsafe for their kids to walk or cycle. Yet by driving their kids they create more traffic which makes streets even more unsafe. As a community we need to find a way of reversing this negative cycle. One response has been to create a single day focus on the issue, for example, International Walk a Child to School Day and World Environment Day. While these draw attention to the issues, they do not create the 'infrastructure' needed for long-term sustainable solutions. However, this kind of 'infrastructure' -- for example, the Walking School Bus - requires resourcing and higher levels of community support. It was felt that there needs to be a program that bridges the gap between the single day focus (which is not long enough to effect significant behavior change) and the longer term solutions such as the Walking Bus. |
