The Walking School Bus has become increasingly popular in the last few years. A walking school bus provides children with a safe and healthy mode of transportation to school. The idea is simple. The designated adult supervisor "picks up" each student, house by house, on foot. The group of students walk to school together along a set route, all the while enjoying fresh air, exercise and friendly conversation.

The Walking School Bus consists of an adult with a cart (to carry students' heavy book bags) walking a prescribed route through a neighborhood before and after school each day. This program has been very successful in other parts of the world, and there's even a British-produced book on how to establish a Walking School Bus.

As a result of mapping Safe Routes to School, we will be able to identify good walking routes to pick up students who live within a walkable radius from school.

If their parents and schools are interested, the children we meet through WOW will be the first riders of the Walking School Bus in Santa Cruz County.

In order to get the Walking School Bus working, we need volunteers to help with two elements of the program. The first task is to map the best routes for the Walking School Bus to take, with a high level of cognizance for the safety of the children. Once these routes have been decided, volunteers will then be needed for the Walking School Bus drivers. These will be the parents that will be responsible for leading the Walking School Bus from its designated start point to the school.
